Continuing on with the mini series #smilewithnate, in todays little article, I want to take you through some tips and tricks on what to wear for the specific photoshoots I offer.
Tips And Tricks To Make Your Photoshoot Full Of Smiles
In this article, I want create some fun hints and tips for dressing for your photoshoot. Now ill be honust this was a bit difficult for me to write because for me and my photography style, I want to capture the real person, the physical story behind your business. It would be wrong for me to dictate how you should dress, because each person has individuality.
Take me for example, I’m a nerd and a big kid at heart, I love Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles, Scooby Doo and Star Wars, and its not uncommon to see me rocking up wearing a turtles t shirt, especially when my company branded clothing is in the wash. It doesn’t make me unprofessional, it’s just an extension of my personality.
But hopefully these tips will help you feel confident in what you choose to wear, and give you some inspiration on dressing for your photoshoot
Tips On Colour Coordination
Colour theory is important, and this guide is too short to go into it heavily, but I always tell people to think about the message there trying to tell their clients, as general rule here are some things to consider for your colour choices
- Dark colours - Are recognised as the more formal wear, there seen as a more authoritative colour
- Lights colours - Can be seen as more open, they can make the wearer seem more approachable and friendly
- Bright colours - Convey a sense of confidence and high energy, and can also be very approachable and welcoming
- Pastel and muted colours - These can make the wearer seem less threating, conserve, and approachable and friendly
- Powerful High Contrast Pairings -This kind of combination which could include a dark coloured jacket and a light shirt convey a powerful image, it shows authoritative power and influence.
Comfort
It’s important to feel comfortable in your clothing, but remember this is for a professional headshot, you’re trying to make a impression to potential clients, and employers

Contrast with Your Skin Tone
It’s important to choose colours that match your skin tone, you don’t want to look naked or look like a floating head.
As a general rule make sure the colours you wear are either significantly darker, or lighter than your skin tone try not to contrast.
Tips For Dressing For Corporate Headshots
Corporate headshots normally require something formal, like a suit and tie combination, but this is personal to you, and the industry you work in and what your corporation requires. The goal is to establish yourself as a professional, someone with authority in your network of business. If this is for LinkedIn, you want to convey a sense of honesty, integrity, and show potential hiring managers why they should consider you.
Don’t Wear Anything Under Your Shirt
Try to avoid wearing anything under the shirt, I know for a lot of men they wear a t shirt under there shirt to help stop the build-up of sweat, but we don’t want to tell people about that during your photoshoot so avoid where possible.

Avoid Flappy Collars
For those who opt out of wearing a tie, ensure your collar is stiff, to avoid flappy collars, it looks a little messy, especially when you look smart and tidy.
Avoid Worn Out Clothing
Where possible use new or nearly new clothing, your colours will bright and fresh and help pop in the photos, try to avoid old worn-out clothing that show signs of pilling, I know we all have that favourite piece of clothing but remember this is a professional headshot, your trying to make an impression.

Tips For Dressing For A Personal Branding Photoshoot
Branding photoshoots are far more relaxed than formal headshots. Here you can be mix both casual and formal attire, for me personally this is my favourite type of shoot because there are no rules here, and this is where the story telling part can come to life. However, I do have some fun tips to give you to make the branding shoot fun and enjoyable.

Wear your personality
Branding photoshoots are designed to show you to the world, there an extension of your business brand, so wear colours that complement your brand, or wear classic clothing that reflect your personality.
Bring Props
Bring props with you on your branding shoot, like a branded mug or a notebook, but again make sure your clothing complements them, Ill be taking close ups of you and its important that they contrast.

Keep Jewellery Simple
This is an important note for all types of photoshoots, corporate and branding, to much jewellery is distracting, keep it simple, jewellery should be seen as a finishing touch not a distraction.
A Little Recap
Just remember this is an amazing experience, just relax, ill guide you and help you get the most out of your experience, don’t be afraid to ask questions, there is no such thing as a bad question. Just enjoy the moment, this is going to be an amazing day.
